DIE TOTALE ERFASSUNG

Using the biography of ordinary worker Paul Brodek, the documentary (“Total data capture”) shows how quickly a person can turn from a respectable citizen into a terrorist. In a montage that runs parallel to his dramatic experiences, contemporary scientists extol their innovations; statisticians enthuse about the necessity of data collection and friendly officials of Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) report on modern crime fighting. A pig farmer is proud of his animals with their implanted chips and the manager of an American old people’s home looks forward to using chips on his old-age pensioners who suffer with dementia. Constantly switching between the past and present, the film endeavours to demonstrate the possible consequences of monitoring and control by the state.
